A trip to the Sacred Valley of the Incas in Peru provided the inspiration for Vanessa Martins to create the Spitz rug. Drawing on the meandering lines of the valleys, the earth furrowed for corn crops, and the gorgeous mountains, the rug's design captures the rugged geography and the course of the sacred river Vilcanota.
Spitz is a rug like no other. Made from hair-on cowhide in dyed colors, the surface design is lasered onto the hair, creating a striking contrast between the classic color and the bold laser work. The manufacturing process of the Spitz rug involves several stages. The hair-on cowhide, which is the essential raw material, undergoes tanning and finishing processes to ensure its durability and resistance to mold, fungi, stains, and shedding. The laser work is then done on the dyed hide, and the rug is cut into strips and assembled according to the designed created specifically for the rug.
